matthias hillner

Matthias Hillner was born in Germany, where he trained first in photography, then in visual design. He received his MA in Communication Art and Design at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in 2001, and worked subsequently for various London-based design agencies.

Matthias returned to the RCA in 2004 to conduct an MPhil research (Master of Philosophy of Arts) until 2007. His investigation into transitional typography led to the formation of the Studio for Virtual Typography, a design consultancy that specialises in developing typographic solutions for multimedia environments. The business development was supported by the NFTS (National Film and Television School), and sponsored by NESTA (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts).

Matthias is senior lecturer for Graphic Design at the University of Hertfordshire, and teaches at the Department for Service Design at the Royal College of Art.
