Workshop

Building With Living Waste Mycelium

with Arne Hendriks

16 Dec 2022

We build pigeon towers with living waste mycelium. We want to learn how to work with living matter, for other than human life, with limited control over the material, with a sense of time and space. While we shape 'it", "it" shapes us. By inviting pigeons to nest in the living towers we invite them into our lives, into our consciousness, into our learning environment. Both pigeons and mycelium are great storytellers. Pigeons are incredible navigators, great cleaners of street debris, powerful cultural metaphors of hope and peace, and good companions, and they they also produce some of the world's best poop. Mixed with the transformational properties of the mycelium, the towers will soon turn into fertile soil.

During this workshop, we will share what we have learned so far in building with living materials, and discuss why iconic living structures need to return to the cityscape. We will do this from the knowledge we have gained while building our pigeon towers.

Please join artist Arne Hendriks as he explain some of the practical and not so practical aspects of working with living matter for a living environment.

What you will do

For over two years we've learned how to build with waste mycelium. In this workshop we'll teach you what we've learned so far; practically as well as from a metaphorical perspective.

We will introduce you to the living material. Its challenges, its amazing properties, the culture surrounding it.

We will talk about pigeons, about pigeon towers and about pigeon poop.

We will talk about oyster mushrooms and why they are such a great alternative to meat.

And then Arne will introduce you to the towers he already built. You will get hands-on with the material as we collectively continue to build on the latest tower outside in the public space around Mediamatic.

You will receive an art newspaper made by Arne Hendriks

Arne Hendriks

Arne Hendriks is an artist and researcher on human ecology. He believes we should be more generous towards ourselves in allowing radical new ideas and practices to re-define our relationship with the planet. In his practice, he focusses on the process instead of a result. By patiently letting the findings of his research be his guide, he allows himself to constantly shift views and perspectives and discover new realities within his topic.
