Although electromagnetic fields may not be visible or commonly perceived in daily life, they are a fundamental physical phenomenon present everywhere in nature. Some aquatic species can sense these fields to navigate, perceive their environment, and even communicate with one another. Meanwhile, various machines operating in Amsterdam’s harbor emit artificial electromagnetic fields, creating a complex underwater electromagnetic environment.
What does this hidden microscopic world sound like? Is it chaotic and noisy, or unexpectedly calm and harmonious?
In this workshop, we will build a hydrophone capable of detecting underwater electromagnetic waves and explore the invisible electromagnetic flows in the bustling waters and waterfront areas of Amsterdam.
The workshop consists of two sessions on the same day, with a short half-hour break in between:
Building an Underwater Electromagnetic Microphone – Participants will construct a microphone using a coil, microphone cable, small amplifier module, and waterproof silicone.
Field Recording & Listening – We will take our microphones into the field, immersing them in water to eavesdrop on the mysterious world of underwater electromagnetic fields.
Through this experiment, we will step beyond everyday listening experiences and explore new ways of hearing.
Minji Kim has been actively exploring unrevealed stories in places that need socio-political attention, such as reclaimed land in urban and ecological contexts.
To avoid appropriating the beings in these places into her own language, she has developed situated listening modes based on pluralistic geopolitical research and embodied listening. She re-enacts these stories through audiobooks, performances, and electronic instruments, using the situated listening approach. Minji Kim graduated with a Master’s in ArtScience from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and is currently a PhD student at ACPA, Leiden University.
