Opening Night:

Rites of Play

Unveiling the Open City Monastery

What if a space existed to respond to human needs, not with forced positivity, but with the quiet acceptance of what is? A place where rest is a ritual, where food and shelter are offered freely, and where the rhythm of life slows to a more human, or perhaps a more-than-human pace.

On the 16th of May Mediamatic transformed into a space where reflection and experiment  are welcome, marking the beginning of a new programme inspired by the reverence of monastery living.

The opening night showcased the work of 11 artists from different backgrounds inviting participants for a multisensory experience, exploring the various locations at Mediamatic.

Our approach draws inspiration from the way we find reverence and connection within Amsterdam. We start in a particular location, hoping that others will see what we're doing and feel empowered to apply these ideas in their own lives and organizations. This is a collaborative journey towards a new way of living and understanding together. Right here, in the vibrant heart of the city, we embrace the beauty of the incomplete, the lessons learned from failure, and the continuous process of growth.

Why a Monastery?
Why Open?

Monasteries, historically, offered sanctuary, a world apart. They possessed a distinct rhythm, a ritual of leaving behind the material world before crossing those imposing doors—a symbolic threshold to a different way of being. We reclaim that sense of intention, creating a space for archiving, gardening, fermenting, and, above all, experimenting. A place to explore alternatives, awaken the senses, conduct research, and learn collectively through our mistakes, embracing a DIY spirit.

Our monastery is open. Open to all—human and more-than-human. Open to failure, as a vital step in our collective experimentation and learning. Open in access, with free exhibitions, and open in mind, welcoming diverse perspectives, especially in a time of censorship and close-mindedness.
