Whether you're working on an installation, a participatory event, or an ongoing research project, finding the right way to document your process can be challenging—especially when the work doesn’t fit into a fixed form. Deep Documenting is a workshop for artists, designers, researchers, and makers who want to experiment with documentation as an active, intentional part of their practice.
In this workshop we look at the diversity of documentation in the art and design field, both conventional industry methods and artistic approaches. Through hands-on practicing with visual, audio, and diagrammatic methods, participants are invited to explore how different media can trace, translate, or even transform the essence of their work. The idea for this workshop grew out of the working methods developed at Bubble Box, a project space where documentation is considered an essential part of the process. Rather than using documentation to prove that something ‘happened,’ we treat it as a site for ongoing research: a way to gather material, reflect on intention, and create something that can be shared and built upon. In this spirit, Deep Documenting invites participants to explore a range of models and media for capturing their work—before, during, or after a project unfolds. Participants will be guided through examples and case studies, then develop a documentation plan for a project of their own, whether upcoming, past, or in-progress. They will leave with a personalized approach and a practical set of tools for shaping how their work is remembered, understood, and extended.
Curator and producer Naomi van Dijck is committed to creating horizontal structures that facilitate collaborative spheres for cross-disciplinary learning. Subtly skewing the process focussing on rhythm, relations, resources, management and mediation, artistic practice can become less fixated on itself and more open to other perspectives. The tools used in this effort range from workshops to platforms and from publications to ritualistic experiences.
Naomi is the initiator of Bubble Box, previously worked as programme manager at Mediamatic and curated/produced projects and exhibitions at Het Nieuwe Instituut, Ars Electronica and the Venice Biennale for Architecture 2018.
Bubble Box is a presentation space in Amsterdam dedicated to collective artistic research, where artists develop new methods together with participants that contribute to their artistic practice. Research bubbles include: habitat, storytelling, learning, and governance. Through monthly sessions—ranging from workshops to TT(RP)Gs—the public is actively involved in the artistic process. Bubble Box offers artists space for conceptual deepening, methodological reflection, and the documentation of their work as an open form of knowledge sharing. In addition, Bubble Box shares the methods developed for the workshops through its platform and external workshops.
