Odour of Sanity

Ever wondered what smells the walls of monastery library hold? Or how would it be to wear the scent of brackish water?

Sanitation is important to all living beings in and around the city monastery. Because not all beings share the same notion of sanity, perfumer and scent designer Frank Bloem composed a wide range of scents that fit the diversity of our community which you can find around Mediamatic's Living Labs.

Incense

Since long incense has been used to free sanctuary places from evil spirits and unhealthy odours. Incense is the perfect way of using plants' own defence system and as a side effect it will bring you closer to the good of your choice.

Wormwood

What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger, according to Friedrich Nietzsche. The bitter substances of wormwood not only broadened the mind of absinth drinkers, but also gave a mysterious odour to the ones who used the plants of this family.

Sweat

We humans are not big fans of the smell of sweat, although it can be a potent aphrodisiac in our love life. Other beings are not so narrow-minded. Insects love the smell of sweat and other primates and cats also adore it.

Rat

An important and noble group of inhabitants of our open city monastery is the family of rats that live under our feet. You are lucky if they show themselves to you. And word goes that when you see one you will find fortune on your path. Enrich your chances with their favourite scent.

Brackish water

Our ancient location used to be the open harbour of Amsterdam with its notorious past. Back then the waters were salt. Since we lost the connection to the sea, the salt fell down. Now the top layer of our waters are sweet, but in the depth the remains of the past are still present. And perhaps it is wise to get used to salter waters, considering the future with higher sea levels

Books

Books play a critical role in the open city monastery. Not only to secure the history for future generations, but also as objects to carry around to give yourself a more intellectual imago. The smell of books is very well documented and their molecules are present in the odour of the sanitiser.

Mushroom

Fungus has played a critical role in the coming of age of Mediamatic. Their spores still linger around in the air and make Mediamatic an exquisite spot for brewers, bread makers and cheese enthusiasts.

Beer

A monastery without beer is like beer without alcohol. Although present times have been proving different. We don’t need alcohol anymore to open our minds to higher and lower matters. Although we use a lot of alcohol in our monastery, but for different purposes. Because what makes our spirit the lightest? Sanitized body parts of our own choice.
