Workshop & Art Film Premiere:

Drawing the Breath of the Ocean

with Marion Moulen

7 Jun 2026

Join us for Drawing the Breath of the Ocean! Water, older than the Earth itself, is the greatest natural data source of everything we know and do not yet know.

Ocean artivist Marion Moulen invites you into a meditative drawing experience on World Ocean Day, where silence and creation intertwine. Inspired by Haeckel’s diatoms, it unfolds as a dreamscape of microworlds. A space to slow down, draw, and reconnect with the breath of the water. Engaging all the senses, her art film Planet Oxygen and the sounds of the ocean guide the experience.

What you will do

In this immersive workshop, artist Marion Moulen invites participants into the Haeckel Room for a meditative drawing experience centered on biological forms. The session begins with a screening of her art film, which explores the intricate geometries of the natural world. Marion will then guide participants through the specialised, observational drawing techniques she developed during her artist residency at the Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden. By blending scientific observation with artistic meditation, the workshop teaches participants how to use drawing as a tool for deep focus and sensory reconnection with non-human life.

About Art Film - Planet Oxygen

Welcome to Art film Planet Oxygen, your first breath on World Oceans Day 2026.

Marion Moulen her art reflects a glimpse of the Ocean through silent drawn scenes. The cycle of movement, the heartbeat of the ocean, driven by the infinite biorhythm of moon and sun. What do the wind and Saharan dust tell us about diatoms, the Amazon, and ice deserts? Drift along on the Atlantic Gulf Stream with microscopic phytoplankton, diatoms and dinoflagellates; they are the silent breath of life. Dive with me in scenery to feel blue, green and red and be illuminated by prismatic colours in the Black Ocean.

Marion Moulen

Marion Moulen takes you on a journey through her passionate research and sources of inspiration, a voyage through space and time in the world of drawing. Saharan dust from Africa drifted down before her eyes along the shores of the IJmeer. Fascinated by this natural phenomenon, she discovered that Saharan dust carries essential chemical elements vital to the ocean’s breath and the fertility of the Amazon rainforest. Flowing with water and wind, one is carried away within the elements. To make the breath of the Ocean visible, Haeckel’s lithographic drawings serve as a rich source of inspiration for the artist.
Marion Moulen explores the Ocean as a force of creation, and our time from a holistic perspective. Water, older than the Earth itself, is the greatest natural data source of everything we know and do not yet know. Art, science, climate, and spirituality flow together in quiet reflections on the life energy that connects ocean and human as One Body.
