Workshop:

Introduction to Building with Earth

with Ikram Hamdi Mansour

26 Jun 2026

How do we transition from viewing soil as commodity to understanding it as a living, structural collaborator?

Join eco-architect and cultural practitioner Ikram Hamdi Mansour for a hands-on exploration into the world of earth architecture. In an era of climate crisis and resource depletion, rebuilding our relationship with the land beneath our feet is both an ecological necessity and a radical act of care. Ikram’s practice bridges the tactile and the territorial, treating architecture not as a static structure, but as a living, regenerative process.

What you will do

This workshop begins with a brief theoretical journey into earth architecture and ancient, sustainable building techniques. We will discuss how soil acts as an active ground for redefining how humans and non-humans inhabit spaces together.

Following the introduction, we will dive into a sensory, hands-on session inside our Hydroponics greenhouse and around our garden. Through collective making and practical experimentation, you will test, feel, and manipulate local soil, discovering first-hand how raw earth can be transformed into a viable, resilient building material. Come prepared to get your hands dirty and learn through the body.

Ikram Hamdi Mansour

Ikram Hamdi Mansour is an earth-building architect, project coordinator, and artist based in the Netherlands, working at the intersection of ecology, design, and embodied and somatic knowledge.
She explores how land and matter, especially soil, become active grounds for reimagining the relationships between humans, non-humans, and the intertwined realms of the built and natural environment. Rooted in the belief that architecture is a living, regenerative process, her practice cultivates relationships, restores ecosystems, and redefines ways of inhabiting places. Working through material intelligence and bodily agency, Ikram develops spatial responses that bridge the tactile and the territorial, advancing a politics of care and positioning design as a sensorial, ethical inquiry into how we live with land.
