What will you do
The workshop begins with a presentation of the tile experiments produced during Sampling the Canal: Underwater Dining — A Material Survey by Federico Rizzo. Participants will look at how the different recipes behaved and how these tests informed the mixture used for the table.
Working in small groups, participants mix mortar in 40L tanks using the drill mixer: canal sand, hydraulic lime, water, and chopped or pressed algae integrated directly into the mix. Groups rotate between mixing and applying the material, sharing the physical process of casting the full surface.
Algae fronds are pressed in and partially submerged, sediment clusters are distributed unevenly, tool marks can be left visible or smoothed, allowing the final table to record the materials, gestures and decisions involved in its making.

Salicornia Studio, founded by designer Federico Rizzo in 2023, is a design hub focused on product innovation and material research. Combining craft and digital tools, the studio creates objects that merge cultural heritage with contemporary design. Conceived for design research and experimentation, the studio explores the intersections between product design, material culture, and ecological imagination.
