OOGlive

Art, News and Media: Artists comment on the News

OogLive is an evening program in which nationally and internationally renowned audio-visual and performing artists use live and prerecorded image and sound to explore, critique and comment on the news of the Day.

The work of the artists appears not only as live event but also as part of an advanced audio-visual presentation in which a full variety of media channels ( from SMS to print, from prerecorded animations to webcam streams) are combined with live performance. This rich media mix will be integrated in real-time through a cinematic scale interface specially created for the event.

OogLive which begins as a show and ends as a party and is part of the Picnic at Night program, the closing event of Picnic '06, an international conference on the cross media revolution: www.ooglive.com

Tickets can be bought at all known Ticket Service Points, AUB and at Picnic '06.

Tickets will also be availeble at the door on the night itself.

The program
Artists are asked to comment on the news and currant affairs. What the news will bring is off course uncertain and only on the event itself will we know what exactly the content of the program will be.
The multifacetted interface will show the many mediastreams coming in. The audience will be looking at all kinds of visual information, coming from many sources, at the same time. However when the program starts there will be a clear direction and the contributions of the artists are shown in such a way that they will receive full attention of the audience.

Background - Oog online
OogLive is a spin-off based on the success of Oog (Eye) a project of the national Dutch daily news paper De Volkskrant. ‘Oog’ began in September 2004 as an online platform in which each week a different artist working in sound and image is asked to respond to news and current affairs. The selection of artists participating has grown into a varied group of nationally and internationally artists working with very different forms of expertise and approaches. Oog is visited by a weekly audience of an average of 3000-5000 visiters and has become one of the most visited pages of the online edition of the newspaper outside the news section.
Each contribution is displayed prominently for a week and remains accessible in the ‘Oog’-archive

Central to our concept is the fact that each contribution is the result of the individual perspective that each artist brings to current affairs and the way they are represented in the wider media, as well as the use of online media and the interaction with the visitor/reader of the Volkskrant on-line. We are open to artists contributing to ‘Oog’ in a variety of ways, ranging from individual pieces through to serialised sets of images, sound, moving and interactive image. Here artist not only reflect critically on news and current affairs. Artists and designers who are otherwise used to working in more traditional envirornments, such as the gallery and in print, now have the role alongside other opinions makers on a major national news platform.
