He obtained a PhD at Virginia Tech (1982) and was a Post-Doctoral Associate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1983. Since 1983, he has been a Professor at the New University of Lisbon in Portugal with stints as Visiting Professor at Cornell University (1988-90) and MIT (1998-99).

António Câmara has been a pioneer in the area of geographic information systems having led the development of innovative virtual reality, multimedia and mobile applications described in his book “Environmental Systems” published by Oxford University Press in 2002,.

He was Senior Consultant for the Expo98 project (1993-98) that renovated 225 ha of land for the World Fair held in Lisbon in 1998. António Câmara inspired Digital Portugal, an interactive fly-over the whole country, used by 1.5 million people at the event. Antonio Camara was also a Senior Consultant of the National Geographic Information System project (1986-2000) that became the first spatial data infrastructure in the Internet in 1995.
