Social RFID Hacker Camp 2009

5 days 24/7, premiere at PICNIC '09

18 Sep 2009
25 Sep 2009

For five feverish days — 24 hours a day — this stimulating event explores various recent technologies like RFID, physical computing and social networking but also looks into aspects of interaction design and interactive processes. The aim of the The Mediamatic Social RFID Hacker Camp 2009 is to create engaging interactive installations, wearables, spaces and places for the visitors of PICNIC to play with. In previous years, these installations have created some of the most fun and unforgettable PICNIC memories.

Annually Mediamatic gathers excellent excellent coders, (interaction) designers, roboticians and physical computeers — who know how to enjoy a creative and technical challenge — to gather in the days preceding PICNIC. This year a group of researchers and students from MIT will participate as well, creating an even more interesting and high-leveled atmosphere.

For Mediamatic it's all about the DIY attitude towards our technological environment. With a group of artist and designers they try to explore the technologies that surround us and develop their cultural and social potential. PICNIC is the perfect playground for this. People leave the festival with a totally different understanding of RFID.

The technical starting point is the capabilities of anyMeta, the semantic CMS website (http://www.picnicnetwork.org) that Mediamatic Lab built for PICNIC. It functions as a online social network environment. The other important aspect is the use of RFID technology. We will have a huge amount of Mifare RFID readers and ikTags. Guests to PICNIC will all receive an RFID (ik) tag that directly connects to their profile page in the picnicnetwork. We also have all kinds of Arduino boards, sensors, and all the other necessary electronics and building materials to play and experiment with.
