Pedro Meyer - Pedro Meyer Barreto

Artist, designer, teacher and researcher...

Pedro Meyer is an artist, designer, teacher and researcher, with a degree in Design from State University of Rio de Janeiro, Esdi/Uerj (2004). Currently he is taking a Phd course in Visual Languages at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, UFRJ, where he also did his Master’s Degree, both under the supervision of Carlos Zilio. He also studied at the Parque Lage School of Visual Arts and in artists’ studios, including that of Gianguido Bonfanti and Luciano Mauricio. His artistic work has won awards and been exhibited in various institutions in Brazil, particularly related to his pictorial production. He also works as an illustrator and his illustrations have appeared in various books of classic authors like Hermann Hesse, John Steinbeck and Albert Camus.

Pedro Meyer’s language research begins with drawing and painting from the study of real life models, and then moves on to incorporate the use of photographic references. In editing the objects that he transfigures, Meyer seeks to create something that is strange and seductive, acting as a filter of intensity. His desire is to transform photographs and ephemeral experiences into something different, more lasting.

In his artistic development, Pedro Meyer has worked with different processes and media, experimenting with the limits of the supports. For him artistic research is not separate from theoretical and political considerations concerning how the work functions – its origin and circulation are interpreted. The intended gesture does not exclude the direct and mysterious confrontation of every line.
