The Beach

A day trip to the beach can be made at any given moment, even when the weather stays bad all day. Because the beach is great for sun bathing, but also good to watch the stormy sea from under the cover of the pier. You can eat fresh fish there, although it’s mostly from elsewhere. Surfing is easiest in Wijk aan Zee. In the dunes of the nature reserve you can bike and hike around. It stretches out behind several beaches on the West Coast.

By moving westwards from North, you inevitably end up at the beach. On sunny days special beach trains are riding from Amsterdam Central Station to Zandvoort, full of kids and young mothers. And if it’s really hot, the roads to the beach are packed with cars – radio blasting, passenger’s legs hanging out the windows. By bike it takes you over an hour to get to the beach, following a road of your choice. The fastest way is the straight line that the Fast Flying Ferry makes over water, from Central Station to IJmuiden. From there it’s just a short way to the sea.
