Paint In and around Biotoop

Types of paint, color and where it's used.

Around the biotoop terrein we use a lot of paints, in order to know which paint to use where to find it please check the article below.

Introduction

There are a lot of paints out there in the world but for general purposes, we use a general set of paints. In order to choose the right paint, there is a list you can check below, if you are still unsure ask the handyman. If the paint has to have specific properties or you have to paint strange materials some further research might be necessary.

the paint can be found in the workshop in the back of the barn in the paint rack.

In order to keep it easy (and cheaper) we try to use common colours (RAL) premixed colours that are cheaper than those that are mixed at the store.

Colour and RAL code

There are a lot of ways to name or describe colours. For the general-purpose, we use the RAL colour coding system. This is a widely used german coding system for colours. A classic RAL code has 4 numbers that indicate the colour of the paint.

For instance RAL 9005 is Gitzwart or Jetblack. And is the most commonly used black paint. By using the RAL system it’s easier and cheaper to find and use paint.

Discolouration

Over time paint changes colour this is because of UV in sunlight but also dirt and other pollutants. If you put fresh paint of the same colour over older paint it will look different. If you want to redo a bit of paint it’s best to keep it really small or do a bigger portion.
In the case of white paint, you can try a white with more yellow/brown like RAL 9010 or Ral 9001 to match a discoloured white (normally 9010 or 9016)

Texture Mat, Satin or Gloss

Paints come in different textures, this does something with the light refraction on the surface. This also changes the color or feel of the colour.

The three common textures are

  • Matt
Matt finish absorbs most light, and has little to no shine to it. It will also hide unevenness better.
Because of the poresness it’s less resistant to water and harder to clean.
  • Satin
Satin is a half gloss or half matt finish. Some paints don’t come in matt then satin is your best option. It has some of the same properties as gloss but with less shine.
  • Gloss/high gloss
This gives a smooth and shiny finish. This usually means it’s stronger better protected against water and easier to clean.

Different types of white paint:

There are different types of white that are commonly used.

  •  RAL 9001 cremewit or creme/Eggshell
This white is more brown/yellow also called broken white
  • RAL 9003 singaalwit or signalwhite
This is a white with a slight bit of grey in it.
  • RAL 9010 Zuiverwit or purewhite
This is the most common white it still has a slight brown/yellow in it
  • RAL 9016 Verkeerswit or trafficwhite
This is the most light/whitest of all the whites and is very common these days
