Esther Weltevrede is a PhD candidate and lecturer at the www.mediastudies.nl at the University of Amsterdam. She is coordinator of the digitalmethods.net (DMI), which aims to develop novel methods and tools for studying the web. Since 2007 she is a member of govcom.org, a foundation dedicated to development of political tools on the web.

Her PhD research is about national Webs. As part of the Digital Methods Initiative Research and PhD Program, this particular study aims to develop methods and tools with a locative-technical focus. The aim of this study is two-folded. Firstly, to locate and demarcate national web spaces utilizing various locative-technical specificities of the Web. Secondly, to diagnose the condition of a country from a Web perspective by analyzing social communication within the demarcated space.

Before studying new media she graduated as designer. In her research with DMI and Govcom.org design and new media come together. and has combined design and new media in teaching Information Visualization at MA Editorial Design at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht.
