Description

Borago officinalis, or borage, is a member of the boraginaceae family. It is an annual, whose distinctive blue flowers are in bloom June-October. Borage grows to about 60cmx30cm.

Borage has many uses as a domestic remedy. It is said to help alleviate melancholy, alleviate swelling, and relieve pre-menstrual tension and skin complaints. The leaves can be added to salads or as a flavoring to some wine-based drinks. The flowers, which have a sweet cucumber-like flavor, can also be used as a cheery addition to salads and as a garnish on a drink.
