Play the odds in Naples (p)

Naples, Italy

Welcome to the birthplace of Lotto where you will get a chance to play with experimental cinemas, artistic laboratories, pirate broadcasting and urban transformations. At the very least I guaranty that you will walk away with some inspiration.

EXAMPLE TRIP:

Day 1 - Amsterdam - Naples

You arrive at the Aeroporto Internazionale di Napoli and are feeling lucky, so you decide to take the bus rather than a taxi. Settle into your hotel and then you are off to the nearest tabacchi to play your first lotto ticket! By now, you are ready to meet your guide Diana at locals-only spot Osteria da Carmela for drinks and proper Italian mangiare. Muse over your play options for the coming days and then head to experience indie music at Superfly on Via Cisterna dell’Olio!

Day 2 - Experiment with Cinema

Since you are wanting to dive into spontaneity you will hurry to meet Peppe Morra, founder of Fondazione Morra, a private foundation placed in an old electric plant upside Piazza Dante. With some guidance from Peppe's daughter, Raffaella, you will be exposed to expanded and experimental cinema (her area of expertise). Then using their exhibits and workshop material you will be thrust into their Laboratory to create your own performances and cinema. Later, it's off to the Tasting Room where you will meet people, bend opinions, discuss art and anything else that strikes your fancy.

Day 3 - Mess around with N.EST

Longing to stretch your legs and your perception you meet up with Danilo Capasso, designer and sound artist, founder and director of N.EST for pizza at Pizzeria Da Michele in the old city centre. Danilo will take you on a whirlwind moto-tour of the outskirt of East Naples with the port and the old dismissed plants. Take pictures using your newfound 'vision' making you a participant of a crossbreeding process among urban space, art, creativity and architecture. Then you can publish on N.ESTube, the site-specific English speaking N.EST video community.

Day 4 - Express yourself

Today you will give your eyes a rest and sit in on a free thinkers academy: Assise di Palazzo Marigliano. Rant and rave with the other young debaters at this free academy of citizens only on Sunday mornings and located in the beautiful Palazzo Marigliano. Do not miss it (with an Italian speaking friend)! In the same building you continue to chat at a nice little bar-theatre called Tintadirosso where you and your newfound amici Italiani will find happy hour together.

Day 5 - Play it by ear

You feel lucky today and decide to play to lotto again. While wondering what deeper meanings the numbers could have for you, go to meet Piero Golia (just returned from LA) for some insights and another jolt of creativity. Piero is an artist that endeavors through his actions and installations to build his own legend – not surprising for someone whose name means "Goliath". He will lead you to Largo Baracche, an artistic laboratory gallery situated in the heart of the Spanish Quarters where you will find all manner of media to play with. Piero is the ideal person to encourage your playful intrigues in this dynamic and artistic space.

Day 6 - Take on the establishment

Time to meet a real pirate! Alessandro Cimmino, one of the most influential among the young Italian landscape photographers, will help you pillage and plunder the airwaves at Telestreet and INSUTV, a 'pirate' micro-broadcasting station in an area that can't be reached by the owners of the official frequency license. Using their tools of social communication and entertainment you will contribute to piracy by creating public projections, self-made video products or live video jockey sets. Damn the man!

Day 7 - Naples - Amsterdam

After sleeping in you stop by the tabacchi for one last game of lotto. If you got lucky, you will hail a taxi to the airport. If not, you will have a quick cup of coffee and prepare yourself for what is sure to be an eventful bus trip.
