Every day man is confronted with different kinds of information. This information is structured by our brain. One could say there are two worlds: the world outside and the idea of the world outside in our heads. Maaike tries to research the tension between these two worlds in her work. “I am interested in this state of visual confusion, in which things have a certain form before the brain structures them into logical and useful information.”

In Maaike’s work elements which are part of our perception like light, shadow, volume, texture, colour and movement are still maintained but she changed their sequence and hierarchy. “How would the loss of visual logic influence our lifes, when visual stimuli in the form of pure chaos excite our brains?”
