Presentation:

Scent as Storyteller

Odorama 13 - with Tanja Deurloo, Martina Florians and Calliope Tsoupaki

2 feb 2017

Calliope Tsoupaki, Martina Florians and Tanja Deurloo, three scent geeks, gather on the crossroad of the different ways that scents connect to memories, connotations and emotions. They started their journeys each from their own field of expertise, either perfume design, timeframes and music. Finding each other on the intersection of their work innovative scent applications occur. During this Odorama their crossroad was shared, covered with scents, perfumes, odours, music, stories, emotions and people.

"You might even change your odour while you pass by and listen to the tales of scent. “

Tanja Deurloo

How are smell, associations and memory connected? Tanja Deurloo is an scent expert and perfume designer with a background in chemistry and has an impressive list of clients and projects. For Odorama she gave us an introduction on the interconectedness of smell, associations and memory, and made a selection of her projects highlighting those that incorporate scented storytelling the most. Such as Perfume Profilings, Good Luck (book+perfume, 2011), Ruik de Tijd (Zuiderzeemuseum 2014), Narcissus (2014-2017) and Het Kabinet van de Dames van de Beethovenstraat (2014) together with Martina Florians.

Iris Vetter, Martina Florians, Tanja Deurloo

Martina Florians

Artist Martina Florians uses the interconnectivity of smell and memory in her work. In 'Kabinet van de Dames' she provides a situation where storytellers can meet and exchange. Using the sense of smell next to sound and visuals, the installation leaves an emotional impact on its visitors. We also experienced some of her work; Martina brought some of the perfumes used in this installation.

Calliope Tsoupaki

Narcissus is a melodrama by Greek-Dutch composer Calliope Tsoupaki for scent and 6 musicians (piano, violin, cello, bass clarinet, horn and harp) which she developed together with Tanja Deurloo. A true gesamtkunstwerk involving both music composition, set design and a scent composition. Music an scent are known to deepen the total sensorial experience, which is enhanced by performing narcissus in its purest form; without text, libretto or song. It is the first time ever that scent en sound have been composed to interact with each other in one piece, influencing each other during the creative process and the concert.

The Changing Smells - 'The Changing Smells' enables one to create a personal scent souvenir, and exchange it with someone else's. The installation revives the Stasi-history with the 'Geruchsproben' in a subtle way. Upon entering the ACC Galerie you collect your own scent by wearing a piece of flannel around the neck while visiting the exhibition. When leaving the gallery, the flannel is being put anonymously into a small brown glass jar, which is then released into the 'Geruchsprobewechselmaschineanlage'.Graphic… Martina Florians
