We presenteren de installatie ‘Meta_bolus’ van Saša Spačal en Mirjan Švagelj. De installatie onderzoekt de geurige wereld van de microscopische bacteriën in de grond. Meta_bolus laat je verse geosmine ruiken in de bioreactor, de geur die doet denken aan de geur na regen. 

Kom en ruik de regen vanaf 19:00, met een openingspeech door Dr. Toby Kiers.

Na de opening ben je welkom om te komen leren over petrichor, de bekende geur van regen bij Odorama: The Smell of Rain om 20.00.

Meta_bolus

Meta_bolus belicht het metabolische proces als een wisselwerking van bepaalde bolussen of doseringen die de verhouding tussen stoffen definieert als gunstig of nadelig. De Streptomyces bacteriën in de installatie geven een verleidelijk geosmine aroma af; een snuifje kan de herinnering aan een bos na regenval oproepen. De geur van natte bladeren is verweven met de geschiedenis van menselijke resistentie tegen antibiotica. In het Anthropoceen worden middelen ondergedompeld in de metabolische flow waarbij farmacologische doseringen asymmetrisch uitgewisseld worden. De menselijke soort is geen uitzondering en niet-selectieve farmacologische nalatigheid kan dodelijke gevolgen hebben. Kunnen mensen de toenemende resistentie tegen antibiotica ruiken?

“Metabolism circulates and generates novelty in all strata matter/culture.” – Myra Hird

Biotechnological installation ‘Meta_bolus’ exposes the planetary metabolic process as an exchange of certain boluses or doses that define relationships between agents as either beneficial or adverse. The Streptomyces bacteria in the installation emit a seducing geosmin aroma, a single sniff of which can evoke the memory of a forest after rain. The aroma of wet leaves is intertwined with the history of human resistance to antibiotics. In the Anthropocene agents are immersed in the planetary metabolic flow in which pharmacological doses are asymmetrically exchanged. Humans are no exception and our non-selective pharmacological negligence can result in deadly consequences. Can humans smell the rising resistance to antibiotics?

Living things, such as plant seedlings and slugs, still call the soil around them home even though they are now a part of Meta_bolus. An intern observes this lovely occurrence with Spačal.

20-02-2020 Meta_Bolus - de opening van Meta_Bolus - We presenteren de installatie  ‘Meta_bolus’ van Saša Spačal en Mirjan Švagelj.  Meta_bolus belicht het planetaire metabolische proces als een dynamiek waarbij stoffen continu zoeken naar balans.  De installatie is een onderzoek naar de geur van regen, dat gedeeltelijk wordt veroorzaakt door de Streptomyces bacterie. Deze bacterie geeft het geosmin aroma af; een snuifje hiervan kan de herinnering aan een bos na regenval oproepen.  De Streptomyces bacterie produceert ook antibiotica en daardoor…

This creates the second loop of the Meta_bolus, an open one where humans and bacteria interact and actively bridge the inter-species gap.
