Every day, we either observe others or are observed by them. Unwritten rules, shaped by societal norms and personal boundaries, determine when and for how long we engage in the act of looking. With this work Renske wants to challenge and dismantle these unwritten rules around observation, extending an open invitation to both look and be looked at.

The installation "Ruimte voor kijken" prompts us to pause and consider our daily viewing behaviour. From the sidelines, people in the space become part of the artwork, while from inside the installation, the environment becomes a subject for observation. Additionally, trough a sensory focused design of the space, Renske invites visitors not only to look at others but also to pay attention to their own experiences of the space.

Tiemersma aims to challenge the unwritten societal rules shaped around the act of looking, prompting us to contemplate our daily viewing behavior. An adaptation of her graduation work Ruimte voor Kijken will be installed at Mediamatic from April 28th. This installation belongs in the Sanctuary for Sensory Participation program.

Additionally, there will be an interactive written questionnaire related to the spaces and textures we experience around us.

About the artist

Renske Tiemersma is a visual artist from Utrecht, is an idealist, someone who is not afraid to make a statement, and a neurodivergent maker.

Neurodiversity is an important part of her work because it directly shapes how she experiences the world. This is because she has trouble filtering her stimuli, meaning she can get very overstimulated, but she also experiences life to the fullest. That intensity, both the challenges and the beauty, is something she tries to capture in her art.

During her time as a student autism ambassador at HKU, she saw how important it is to talk about neurodiversity openly. That’s why she creates work that sparks and facilitates conversation—art that invites people to reflect, connect, and share their own perspectives.
