Border Lab:

Tides of Time

with Deep Time Agency

Miriam and Wouter delved into the history of Mediamatic’s unique heritage location and direct natural and industrial surroundings. For example, they investigated the history of the Sluisdeurenloods on the premises of Mediamatic, alongside dealing with the archaeological and natural finds that were found during the excavations of the IJ Canal.

In this way, Deep Time Agency related to the tension between culture, nature, and industry in Amsterdam. Cultural sites along the IJ river and Central Station, such as Mediamatic, were constantly under pressure from urban development plans that sought to give the industry more space. By focusing on unusual finds, non-human influences, and historiography, Deep Time Agency, with their project Tides of Time, joined the Grain of Salt and Aquatoop programs, in which they critically related to the intrinsic value and threats to the aquatic worlds of the IJ Canal.

About the artists:

In 2020, visual artists Miriam Sentler (1994, DE/NL) and Wouter Osterholt (NL/DE, 1979, NL/DE) set up an interdisciplinary research initiative: Deep Time Agency.

DTA is designed as a multi-year research project that recontextualizes archaeological objects in industrially changed landscapes, in collaboration with local residents, stakeholders and institutions. The initiative merges different historical time layers of places to form a material voice for the present and future of the disrupted landscapes, working in an activist and poetic manner with the symbolics of the objects. By highlighting objects exposed by industrial excavations, we seek to develop a sense of belonging in the disrupted landscapes themselves and on a larger scale in the Anthropocene era.
