Slum Sessions #2

Producing an organic favela

20 nov 2012

We enjoyed a very productive session, planning the future of our favela whilst sipping on homemade Vodka produced organically from 100 % local trash.

The Whitetrash Factory

Mediamatic has started serving vodka and jenever that is distilled purely from organic trash from local food markets. We tested the prototype during the meeting and it was delicious. This is just an example of the endless possibilities you can achieve during the Freezing Favela Project this winter.

Architects on the Ready

We had a great turnout for our second planning session. The group included a vibrant mix of urban planners, conceptual thinkers, architects, and doers. Architect Jeroen Kramer from City Dust presented his ideas for a chambre séparée with walls covered in sketches of architectural shapes, reproduced from his many notebooks where he documents our extreme exposure structural forms. Jarrik Ouburg shared his experience in working with students to design the ultimate exhibition space. Jarrik hopes to use similar materials to his previous project, like woven aluminum, to create a perfectly isolated space.

Favela to fulfill

This was not all of course. There were many enthusiastic participants, some who offered to host photo lab and sewing workshops and others who wanted a space to practice slacklining during the winter. We also discussed what materials would be best fit (or most interesting) to work with and we thought about how we can involve the local community in letting us know what is necessary. After all, a favela only exists to fulfill needs.

Freezing Favela

Freezing Favela is a small city within Mediamatic Fabriek. Builders, cooks and other makes have been given the possibility to claim a part of the big industrial hall as their own. They work on their projects autonomously, but like in any other community, materials, space and functions have to be shared. Favela citizens are making tosti's from scratch, paper from cow shit, furniture from cardboard, and food from our very own aquaponics farm. And everyone is welcome to contribute. Build this city with us.
