The formula OLD FILMS NEW MUSIC has gradually been adopted by bands and DJs all over the world. Take for example Jeff Mills’ version of the Buster Keaton film The Three Ages (USA 1923) or Laurent Garnier’s soundtracks for silent French films. The Cinematic Orchestra toured with a new soundtrack for the Russian silent film Man With A Movie Camera and Asia Dub Foundation tackled the controversial French urban drama La Haine. DJ Spooky made a multi-media remix of Birth of A Nation and went on to tackle Sang d’un Poet and the Theatre of Melies. Basically, everybody’s doin’ it, but most performances are programmed as fringe events at film festivals or seen as side-shows at the larger music festivals. The aim of the Rocket Cinema Festival is to bring together the best international examples of current film/music collaborations and to re-stage some of our own successful projects in a festival which begins in Amsterdam in October and ends in Groningen in November.
