Today, art is expected to act, to have a function, to spur realizations, inspire, and incite change. Researcher Angela Bartholomew will look at various contemporary art works in terms of their 'benefit to society'. These benefits are derived from claims made by the U.S. to defend arts funding in 1957 (the times of the Cuban Missile Crisis and the red scare of Communism), and modified with arguments from recent discourse around 'what art is' and 'who art is for'.

In her work, Elise combines music, sound and fine art. Daily sounds and the sound of the environment are her main interest. She is the founder of the Instituut voor Huisgeluid (institute for in house sounds), with which she researches what sounds in house do to our behaviour, body and mind.
