In this controlled sterile environment we inoculate substrate with mushroom spores and experiment with all things fungal.
A clean room is a space with a controlled level of contamination. That means it has very, very few particles in the air like dust. For the Paddestoelen Paradijs exhibition, we built our own clean room inside the exhibition space.
Substrate for the cultivation of mushrooms is made in such a clean room. Starting out with sawdust, biological supplement is added in a mixer. Slowly you add water until the mixture reaches the right humidity level. You sterilize the mixture to kill all the harmful organisms. After it has been sterilized, the temperature is lowered and the mixture is collected in sacks. Now the mushrooms can start growing.
Experience what it's like to work in a clean room. Participate in experiments and workshops, and create your own substrate to grow mushrooms. The clean room is part of the Paddestoelen Paradijs exhibition. Mediamatic Bank, 2011.
