learn from the Reishi master

18 Sep 2014

Phil Ross (US) is one of the leading bio-artists of this moment. Especially for Bio-me, Phil is coming over to share his extensive knowledge and experience on working, designing and making art with mushrooms and mycelium. In this masterclass you will learn not only about reishi cultivation and mycotecture but also about open mycotectural research, design and collaboration.

Masterclass

There is a growing interest in using mycelium as a material for practical and aesthetic applications. Plus a partnering need for clear and open information related to culturing methodologies, testing strategies, and the characterization and standardization of these hybrid fungal composites.

In this special session Phil Ross will share his greater fungal knowledge, with a main focus on the Ganoderma mushroom. Also he will touch on how fungal materials might move into widespread adoption through accelerated open research and information sharing, bring some new materials and answer any question you have regarding these topics.

Phil Ross

American artist Phil Ross has a strong interest in bio-engineering and mycology; he uses living organisms as the inspiration and means by which he makes his work. Through the design and creation of highly controlled environments, Philip Ross manipulates, nurtures and transforms a variety of living species into sculpture.

Why we work with fungi

Fungi are organisms that have an enormous cultural potential that we are only just starting to discover. Some people even claim that they will save the world. For Mediamatic fungi are a source of new materials that can replace many synthetics in the 21st century. They play an important role in our food systems al well as having great symbolical value. That why we like to work with them on many levels.

Bio-me

How will designing with organisms change our perspective on art, design, food and beer? Find out at Bio-me. 3 Days of workshops, talks, tastings, Fermentology! and the expo Kunstformen Der Natur. This masterclass by Phil Ross is part of the Bio-me program. For further information on the complete program, visit www.mediamatic.net/biome.

Mycotecture by Phil Ross, 2009 - This structure was grown from the fungus Ganoderma lucidum (also known as Reishi or Ling-chi) at the Far West Fungi mushroom farm in Monterey, California. Building material made of fungi is lightweight, isolating, waterproof and mold resistant. Find out more about Phil Ross' work on his webpage.

Mycotecture bricks by Phil Ross - These fungal bricks can fill almost any space that can be defined within a three inch cube resolution. The bricks grow together after being in contact for a short period of time, and a monolithic object can be grown from smaller units.
