Living Tower Talk

Amsterdam Below Sea Level

with Arne Hendriks, Thijs de Zeeuw, Mas Jansma, Harm van der Geest & Jolanda Verspagen

22 Mar 2024

Much of Amsterdam's biodiversity is underwater. How do we deal with this as citizens and designers of our city? We talk to Thijs de Zeeuw, known for designing the new lion enclosures in ARTIS, pigeon tower builder Arne Hendriks and microscopist Mas Jansma. We also do a joint expedition into the microscopic life of the Oosterdok with live commentary by ecologist Harm van der Geest and researcher Jolanda Verspagen.

Artist Arne Hendriks has been building pigeon towers of live oyster mushroom mycelium around Mediamatic for 4 years. But what do they actually mean for the city and to what extent do they contribute to our ambition to establish a nature-inclusive relationship with the environment? We ask Thijs de Zeeuw and microscopist Mas Jansma.

Thijs de Zeeuw is a landscape architect and nature optimist. He designs environments where both humans and non-humans can live together. He dreams of multi-species societies in which people see animals as other people, just as we do with our fellow homo sapiens. For the past eight years, Thijs has been designing stays for ARTIS. Designing for "a client you can't talk to" has proven to be a consistently fascinating challenge. It has made him more and more aware of the perspective of 'the other'.

Jolanda Verspagen received her PhD from Utrecht University on the life cycle of the blue-green alga Microcystis. She is conducting research at the University of Amsterdam on the effects of rising carbon dioxide concentrations on algal growth and physiology. Harm van der Geest is an aquatic ecologist at the Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics at the University of Amsterdam.

The monthly Living Tower Talk, curated in collaboration with pigeon tower maker Arne Hendriks, is a collaborative learning process. It takes us on a journey of discovery where the destination is not predetermined and the course emerges during the conversations.
