Critical reflections on the makings of an institution

De Brakke Grond has invited the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) from Flanders to mark the occasion of its twentieth anniversary. Curators Clare Butcher and Christina Li (participants of de Appel Curatorial Program 2008-9) have selected a number of HISK alumni, who in turn were invited to nominate other artists from HISK’s past – thus creating a conversation between affiliated practices across generations and geographies.

Sunday School

During Sunday School on Sunday 1 March from 15u00 to 17u00 we delve deeper into the underlying issues of the HISK Show.

When reflecting on the history of HISK over the past 20 years, it seems too simple to make an overview without taking note of the mythologies, hearsays and minor stories that might otherwise go untold. Using these as anchors and HISK as a starting point, the exhibition is an effort to assemble practices which critically reflect on the making of an institution, such as HISK and others. HISK Show therefore presents a collection of existing works, modified for this particular occasion.
