Planning as a Criminal Act

On February the 6th, opens the exhibition Planning as a Criminal Act opens, initiated by Malkit Shoshan, CEO of FAST (Foundation for Achieving Seamless Territory). Architecture and urban planning are often misused to exacerbate or maintain unfair political, economic or social situations. This was clearly the case with the plans of the Israeli government to the Palestinian village of Ein Hud. To do something about this kind of architecture Mediamatic organised a manifesto and an exhibition.

Videoletters @ Mediamatic Salon

On April the 11th Mediamatic Salon Videoletters, about repairing broken relationships in former Yugoslavia. Documentary makers Katarina Rejger and Eric van den Broek traveled with their cameras through former Yugoslavia. They took videos of people who had the courage to take videos of himself to restore contact with people they had lost during the war. Mediamatic LAB made the website videoletters.net: a do it yourself reconciliation network. An environment to find old friends, a chance to share stories and pictures and to discuss the past and future.

Interactive Film Lab @ Estonia

From the 25th till the 30th of April Mediamatic organised in Tartu, Estonia an interdisciplinary workshop. Sixteen filmmakers, producers and teachers of film, radio and television used their own equipment to create an interactive movie that could be published online and offline.

Flickr Peep Show

On May the 1st, an interactive exhibition: the Flickr Peep Show in which social networking by telephone and the Internet is created through a visual communication with mobtags and keywords. This exhibition is about Flickr.com, the photo site developed by Ludicorp. Flickr is not only a free service for digital photos, but has made it possible to create a social network of professional and amateur photographers through pictures. Through peepholes in the framework of the exhibition space, visitors can see the Flickr Plant. By texting keywords to the server, the pictures were appeared in the installation.

Flickr Peep Show bij Mediamatic - 1 mei t/m 18 juni 2005: De interactieve tentoonstelling Flickr Peep Show waarin sociale netwerken per telefoon en internet aan elkaar gelinkt door visuele communicatie met mobtags en trefwoorden.... wat?! Deze tentoonstelling ging over Flickr.com, de foto website ontwikkeld door Ludicorp. Flickr is niet alleen een gratis service voor digitale foto's, maar heeft het mogelijk gemaakt via foto's een sociaal netwerk van professionele en amateur fotografen te creëren. 1 mei t/m 18 juni 2005

The interactive installation Playing FLICKR was being showed for a week during the exhibition at the restaurant Club 11. On the menu of Club 11 you could find the instructions on how you could play with Flickr. Visitors created their own favorite dining environment through text messages with their desired keywords to send to the system. Then the pictures were published with matching Flickr photos on huge panoramic screens.

Salon Suicide on 11

During this Mediamatic Salon several different projects were presented. Martin Butler and Kirsten Kentler told about The Suicide Project # 2, Magnus Liistamo discussed his project HOME MADE, Ruth Timmermans and Bas Mantel introduced the new DVD label Reel23. And finally, the hip hop operetta Hip Hop on Bones was being performed.

A Secret Service

On July the 15th, the exhibition A Secret Service, a project by Sasker Shearer in collaboration with Olaf Matthes. They take safety very seriously. The increasing exchange of sensitive digital information requires a different view of security strategies. Openly hidden in the public domain, A Secret Service provides an invaluable service to computer users that are related to password management problems. A Secret Service invites the visitor to store his/her password in combination with a timestamp on a website asecretservice.org. This password is then translated from text to speech, automated hourly via web radio and broadcast live at Mediamatic at a time of your choice. Because no one knows that it is your password, and because no one knows what it is, this way something very intimate and secret can be stored extremely safe in public spaces.

Tentoonstelling A Secret Service -

Self-portrait with builders

From the 9th of September till October the 9th the exhibition Self-portrait with builders by Shunji Hori. A series of very detailed portraits of builders, reminiscent of gigantic passport or I.D. photos. But this simplicity is deceiving. The portraits represented the ambivalent synthesized reality that originated from superimposing two different surfaces: a second skin, belonging to the artist, is precisely drafted onto the face of the 6 sitters.

Volume

From October the 15th till the 20th, the exhibition Volume, a guest exhibition on three different platforms: Mediamatic, SKOR and the Netherlands Media Art Institute. The initiative came from eight novice trustees who invited five international artists. They made site installations and structures under the base of the different spatial and temporal structures of the areas.

Food Facility

From October the 30th till December the 11th, 2005 Food Facility took place, a project of artist Marti Guixé. Based on digital search engines, the Food Facility was symptomatic of the change in analogue thinking and acting after the emergence of internet. Everyone had the chance to meet the FOOD HOST, the FOOD ADVISER, and the FOOD DJ and order their take away with a twist. Food Facility was a working prototype restaurant where the central kitchen is replaced by kitchens of existing take-out restaurants in the area. You were invited to make a choice from the menu of these take-outs and consume your order at Food Facility.

30-10-2005 Food Facility by Marti Guixé - Mediamatic Exhibition 2005 at Mediamatic Tentoonstelling, Mediamatic Post CS, 30 October - 11 December 2005 30 October - 11 December 2005. Food Facility was a prototype restaurant of Marti Guixé. Instead of a central kitchen, the restaurant was connected to existing take-out restaurants in the area. Visitors could visit the Food Advisor for tips. By negotiating a bit with other guests it was possible to eat Tom Ka Ka as a starter, then spareribs as main course and Tiramisu as dessert. Seminar on Korsakow

In cooperation with the Utrecht School of Arts and Impakt, Mediamatic organized a 5-day workshop on databased tagged film. In this workshop, 9 film-, tv-, radio-, new media makers and master students from all over Europe, created an interactive film with their own footage. The software used in the workshop is the ever evolving Korsakow system. The participants of this workshop were invited to explore the notion of ‘ local truth’: market forces and political processes can less and less escape their global grids, and media are becoming more and more personal and intimate. Can we only look for truth and authenticity locally?

Amsterdam 2.0

From December the 22nd till January the 29th, the project Amsterdam 2.0 by Maurice Nio and Paul Perry. Amsterdam 2.0 is a legal system from which many different cities can be derived. Amsterdam 2.0 makes it possible that absolute incomparable cities, with their own set of rules, can c0-exist. The only rule - laid down in the Amsterdam 2.0 constitution - is that citizens from one city will not impose their will on the other by force. This observation has led to the invitation of five authors to write stories within the framework of the Constitution of Amsterdam 2.0.

In this edition of Mediamatic Off-line a DVD of clips that were shown during the outdoor projections on the Mediamatic Supermarkt building in 2003. Mediamatic Outside Projections transformed into interior wallpaper.
