Beyond the Backyard is a group exhibition that examines the outdoor places in which we spend our leisure time, focusing on the backyard but looking beyond it in both a literal and metaphorical sense.

Traditionally the backyard is conceived of as an idyllic, private space where one can spend leisure time with the family, develop a relationship with nature, and do it all with minimal intrusion from outsiders. While many photographs in this exhibition speak to the enduring allure of these spaces, they also address the fragility of the associated notions of privacy, “family togetherness,” and a comfortable rapport with nature. The views here variously reflect and question the backyard as it appears in suburban mythology. Meanwhile a small selection of urban and rural settings—such as city parks, street-side spaces, and family farms—serve as counterpoints to the more traditional forms, revealing similar issues to be in play but in different ways.

On June the 26th between 5 – 7pm @ MoCP: you are welcome to join us the opening party of this summer exhibition.
