Cultivation of Sounds

Night Garden 01 - Alexandra Duvekot and Yon Eta

15 Dec 2018

This first edition will feature a performative lecture by Alexandra Duvekot, who is fascinated by the possibility of plant amplification and their capacity to produce actual sound. Following her presentation there will be a DJ set given by her specifically for this evening. The night will move on to another set by DJ's Yon Eta and Poirot.

Alexandra Duvekot

Artist and musician Alexandra Duvekot (1984) started researching the sound of plants early September 2012 at the bio lab of The School Of Visual Arts in NYC. "Plant sounds" can be understood as a means of communication and it appears that plants react to mankind and its environment. The real sound of plants themselves is hard to capture, but data and vibrations can be converted to sound in meaningful ways. The desire to hear the sound of plants lead to thorough research and dialogues with several scientists, sound experts and philosophers around the world.
For a residency at STEIM in Amsterdam in 2014, Duvekot collected 20 ill plants with the Plant Ambulance 'Plantulance' and took them with her to create a musical performance while investigating their differences in behavior. This was the start of a touring project called after it's participants; The Plant Orchestra. The Plant Orchestra performance consists of a musical composition interacting with the 20 ill plants on a 432 Hz pitch and a lecture on the research on the sound of plants and the possibility of contact between human and plant.

Yon Eta

Yon Eta has a maximalist approach regarding sound while consciously striving to limit the options in the production process of his music. This the Hague-based artist runs the DEVORM imprint, a hybrid community challenging the form of AV releases. In his regular Red Light Radio shows and ‘Bar None presents’ clubevents he explores the past, present and future of club culture and pop music in a story telling manner. In recent years he has released audiovisual works in collaboration with FOAM, EYE Film Institute and Freeform Festival and performed at Sonic Acts festival, the Long Progress Bar festival (UK) and Amsterdam Dance Event. Yon Eta has won major awards at De Grote Prijs van Nederland (2010) and the Berlin Music Video Awards (2013).You can check out his music here.

As a collector and listener from Rotterdam my sets and mixtapes are based on fundamentals collected over the years. Different angles translated into slightly obscure, bumpy and soulful rides through the mind of a man in love with the elements and emotion of music.

This event works in conjunction with Botanikurs: Repotting 101 . If you have the ticket to the workshop you can enjoy the Night Garden for free. So stick around after your repotting workshop!
