Queer Manifesto Reading -

As a contribution to Queer Currents, Girls Like Us and Liz Allan will introduce the project for their new publication (its beginnings, context and ambition) and collectively read and discuss excerpts from the Queer Nation Manifesto (1990), followed by a Q&A.

Queer Nation emerged out of AIDS Coalition To Unleash Power, or ACT UP, as a direct-action organisation, enraged at homophobic violence, government inaction toward the AIDS crisis, media prejudice, and the lack of visibility for gays and lesbians. Their mandate was to eliminate homophobia and increase outness, visibility and freedom of movement for LGBT people; they would regularly visit bars to create safe spaces for queers. The name Queer Nation is an acknowledgement that the LGBT community forms a distinct people due to their unique culture and customs.

Girls Like Us' book of queer and feminist manifestos is a collection of writings by artists and activists, poets and politicians, avant gardists and gardeners. All manifestos in the new book are intend for the improvement of the lives of the people they are written for, and this book will present to you the most altruistic collection of manifestos at this side of the feminist liberation movement. It will be released in Fall 2020. More info soon!
