Dr. Cretien van Campen is a Dutch author, editor and scientific researcher in social science and fine arts. He is the author of The Proust Effect, a book on sensory memories. He is also the founder of Synesthetics Netherlands. He is known for his work on synesthesia in art, including historical reviews of how artists have used synesthetic perceptions to produce art, and studies of perceived quality of life, in particular of how people with health problems perceive their living conditions in the context of health and social care services.

Cretien van Campen is principal investigator ageing and well-being at the Netherlands Institute for Social Research | SCP (Sociaal en Cultureel Planbureau), and associate lector applied gerontology at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences. He has an academic background in the social sciences and the fine arts. He is currently engaged in national and international studies into art and long term care, ageing in place and policies for the well-being of older people.
