What is Aquaponics?
The Aquaponic Gardening Community describes aquaponics as "the cultivation of fish and plants together in a constructed, recirculating ecosystem utilizing natural bacterial cycles to convert fish waste to plant nutrients. This is an environmentally, friendly, natural food-growing method that harnesses the best attributes of aquaculture and hydroponics, without the need to discard any water or filtrate or add chemical fertilizer."
The Mediamatic Aquaponics team is currently building an urban oasis based on this ecofriendly system. Find out more here.
Building up a new aquaponics system - At the Aquaponics workshop
On Saturday May 26th approximately sixteen people gathered to build a triple-decker aquaponics tower. This marked the first public aquaponics workshop hosted by the Mediamatic aquaponics team. At Mediamatic Fabriek, Oostenburgereiland Amsterdam.
What will you learn?
We start the day with an introduction to aquaponics and a crash course in biology. Next, guided by our trainers, you will learn how to build a vertical aquaponics farm from scratch. By the end of the day you will know exactly how to build your own system at home, and how the eco-system of the fish tank and grow beds works.
