Two Creative Placements

INTERESTED IN DIGITAL CULTURE & LOVE BRAZIL?

Rich Mix and the Arts Council, England , with Cybersalon, are offering an opportunity for two individuals interested in digital culture to go to Brazil for a period of 6 months, from June 2006. The placements will let artists research the creative opportunities offered at Brazil’s ‘Pontos de Cultura’ (Cultural Points) and to suggest their own research focuses.

The Cultural Points make up the Brazilian Ministry of Culture’s cultural network programme known as ‘Cultura Viva’. The artists will be attached to the Institute of Information Technology Research (IPTI) in Sao Paolo who will act as hosts during their residencies.

‘Cultura Viva’ (Living Culture) was set up by celebrated musician Gilberto Gil in his role as Brazilian Minister for Culture. The Cultural Points consist of connecting up existing cultural organisations all over Brazil, ranging from film clubs and samba schools to native American groups documenting their culture. Under ‘Cultura Viva’, these communities have been provided with multimedia studios configured with Free and Open Source Software tools and supported with regional workshops enabling them to produce digital content and to communicate with other groups across Brazil and beyond. Currently there are over 300 Cultural Points, and there will be 600 of them by the end of this year.
