Having ideas is easier than making them happen. Creators tell about projects that exist today, how their concepts and production process can help inform future work.

This happened Rotterdam #8 -

Let's kick of the year of the monkey in style with a great evening of interaction design. This happened Rotterdam #8 will take place on Tuesday February 23rd 2016 at WORM. We are proud to present you these fascinating projects to enjoy and discuss:

Amy Whittle and Willem Kempers will share their project “Lung”. This breathing and bubble blowing installation is a result of researching their body through DIY data collecting and exploring designs for data visualisations beyond the common two dimensional. During this process the pair experienced (sometimes painful) set backs due to shortcoming of knowledge in the medical and engineering fields, but in the end triumphed.

Casper Lautenbach will talk about Kwebl, an iPad app thats helps kids aged 1 to 5 and their parents communicate using signs (NmG). Starting out as a HKU research project, it evolved into a new way of co-learning trough creative play, using the iPad as a mediator. Casper will share the upsides and pitfalls he experienced in designing a simultaneous user experience for two very different types of users.

With the OpenSurgery initiative Frank Kolkman investigates whether DIY surgical robots - designed for domestic keyhole surgery - could plausibly support more accessible alternatives to the often costly medical health services worldwide. Inspired by the discovery of a slew of YouTube video’s in which uninsured Americans can be seen performing basic operations for others to imitate, the project extrapolates on this phenomenon with the development of a DIY robot assisted surgery system for domestic keyhole surgery.
