Waste Management

Toilets, garbage, and compost systems

With landfills filling up, we are thinking more and more about where all our waste goes. We are researching projects at the Fabriek that will help build waste management systems (toilets, recycling systems, compost systems, etc) that operate on a cyclical process which allow us to re-use our waste.

Who?

SUPERFLEX is an artists' group by Jakob Fenger, Rasmus Nielsen and Bjørnstjerne Christiansen.

What?

With Supergas project they have developed, installed and tested the first Supergas biogas system running on organic materials, such as human and animal stools. The biogas plant produces approx. 3-4 cubic metres of gas per day from the dung from 2-3 cattle – enough for a family of 8-10 members for cooking purposes and to run one gas lamp in the evening.

Why?

It is an interesting alternative for Mediamatic Fabriek as way of use the wasting organic materials from the restaurant, for the sewage and toilet waste.

Compost hot water system - Les Serres de Clara

Who?

The Collective Garden of Saint-Jerome (Québec, Canada) is a project by the not for profit organization “Les Serres de Clara”, which tries to find sustainable solutions for everyday life, by using the garden.

What?

The experiment is based on a fine mulch of residues from pruning and tree leaves. They made a pile with this mulch, keeping it wet and compacted. With a hot water tank in the centre of our compost pile, they had hot water (50 °C) throughout the summer and fall!

Why?

Having hot water all year long with this compost system is the perfect way to reuse your garden in a different and usefull way, for showers and house cleaning.
