By tracking down practices that explore alternative forms of truth, sometimes unfairly mocked and sometimes rightfully controversial, she designs a grey area that seeks to reveal certain belief and value systems that exist in authentic and constructed realities. For Whom?

Would you like a fresh look at a project you are working on in the field of storytelling and fiction? Are you stuck on an artistic and/or design research project and need advice on how to move forward? Are you about to have your exams at an art school? Or do you simply want to know more about fictional, irrational and especially elficological knowledge? Then make an appointment with the artist-designer who is always open to discussing radical new ideas and practices that challenge our ignorance and certainties.
During the meet-up, Pauline welcomes you to a 30-minute discussion over a small glass of morning dew while discussing your work, ideas, and challenges. She also invites you to try on the garments and other artefacts she develops and helps you to know how to go from concept to the making process.

You can expect an honest and stimulating talk filled with (unwanted) advice and original ideas.

About the artist-designer

Who decides the relevance of a knowledge area? Does information have to be true to be valuable?

Pauline Rip is a designer of ignored, marginalized, irrational and even false knowledge. By tracking down practices that explore alternative forms of truth, sometimes unfairly mocked and sometimes rightfully controversial, she designs a grey area that seeks to reveal certain belief and value systems that exist within our societies.

In her residency at Mediamatic she develops a project around an elven knowledge called “elficology”. Based on research done by elficologists into the limitless diets of elves and other folklore creatures (morning dew, bramble wine, slug slime liqueur, fern bread, lichen butter and more), she develops know-how for harvesting each ingredient, including equipment, clothing, gestures, songs... so that it becomes part of an imaginary culture with fictitious rites.

Far from “eco-anxiety” but more towards what she calls “eco-fairy”, her main questions are the following: how can we reimagine the richness of our cultural relationships with plants and nature through the imaginary creatures they inhabit? To what extent can fictional knowledge and cultures explore the value systems that exist in our societies?
