Who is this for?

Are you looking for fresh insight on your artistic research? Do you need to talk through a concept, or receive some honest advice on your project? Close to finishing your finals at art academy? Do you need advice on how to work with textile structures? The conversations with Margherita are meant for anyone who has a special interest in how objects and materials are in relation with our bodies and senses, and how these relations create a secondary effect on human behaviour. In a society that relies mainly on sight, Margherita Soldati wants to make possible to ‘see’ with other sense by creating intimate, personal and interactive relations between her works and the visitors.?

During the session, you will have a 30-minute consultation with Margherita to discuss anything relating to your work: any ideas you may have, or challenges you may be facing. You can expect an honest, invigorating conversation, which leaves you with plenty of food for thought.

About the artist

Margherita Soldati

Margherita Soldati (1991, IT/NL) is an artist/designer with a strong curiosity in tactile perception at the intersection of material research and cognitive science, supported by material research with a focus on the creation of patterns and textures. She is intrigued by how materials stand in relation to our bodies and influence our behavior. In a world full of stimuli, what triggers her fascination is zooming inward to understand the implications with the human body: our senses as the interface allowing exchanges between the outside and the inside.

In a society that relies mainly on sight, she wants to make it possible to ‘see’ with other senses: in her practice, tactility is the medium through which she communicates and in her works, she often explores the tactile perception to create a more intimate and interactive relationship between the space, the work and the visitors.

She usually starts her works with scientific and academic research which she later disrupts through extensive material and techniques research that bring to the final creation of a tangible outcome. As a designer, Margherita tries to combine the freedom of an artist, the pragmatics of a designer, and academic knowledge. She taps into different kinds of knowledge and pulls them out of their respective fields.

In her works, she works out materials (mainly textiles) into organic and texturized shapes to promote a stronger tactile feeling and curiosity and make the viewer question its behavior, emotions and position towards the material and the subject that the material represents. This is the reason she believes her works become alive once there is an interaction with the public. It is her practice to manipulate materials and trigger senses to narrate stories, both my own as the stories of others.

Margherita's work "the Skin is the Extension of the Brain" is currently displayed at Mediamatic.
