Laurence Aëgerter Solo exhibition

23 Jan 2009
21 Feb 2009

2x2projects is proud to present Laurence Aëgerter's most recent project "A.E.G.E.R.T.E.R". The title referring to the phonetical system we use for spelling a persons last name. To avoid misspelling we turn to a simple system of pronouncing other names to spell our own, each name confirming each individual letter. After a while these names become a pattern similar to a memorized phone number. Sometimes the rhythm reproduces as a poem.

Following this system, Laurence Aëgerter invited 64 men to join in groups of eight to be photographed in front of her house. Just alone the search and bringing together random people with a specified name, at a specified time, to stand in the order of her own last name is the project. The photographic result became a beautiful set of documents presented at 2x2projets for the first time.

Laurence Aëgerter seems intrigued by systematic patterns, rules of society and mechanisms of human behavior. She investigates their logical, or sometimes illogical order, researching the side effects of a systematic pattern, using her findings as a conceptual source for various visual art projects. Laurence personifies the systems by rearranging them and putting them in a new context. Her work often is visualized as photography, but it can also become a multi media installation, a video, or a book. She has used systems from both the private and public domain, including encyclopedias, catalogues, daily newspapers and telephone books. The private domain in this respect can be e.g. the collected memorabilia of a retired athlete, or the administration of a deceased neighbor.

Exhibition runs from the opening reception on Friday, January 23, 2009, at 17 - 19 hrs until the 21st of February 2009, at 2x2 Projects, Veemkade 350, Amsterdam. Check out the 2x2projects website.
