Japan's newest audio-visual sensation and Tarek Atoui's trio from France

7 Feb 2008

As electronic musicians working with new tools, new methods and new sounds, often the challenge lies in how to play with other musicians. To establish an equal relationship between new and traditional instruments within musical structures is a difficult task, and we often see one merely becoming a substitute to the other. Our next STEIM concert will feature two groups that tackle this issue through very different approaches.
d.v.d is one of the newest sensations in Japan, crossing over to the mainstream with their drum-controlled electro-pop visual performance. The two drummer are literally "players" in both the musical sense and a Nintendo sense. Diaspo Rama, lead by STEIM's 2008 artistic advisor Tarek Atoui, is an energetic trio that explores complex rhythmic structure within the context of electro acoustic and improvised music. It will be a truly drumatic night at STEIM...

d.v.d
A new type of trio presenting organic and mechanical music, consisting of a drums duo (Itoken and Jimanica) and geometrical pop images by visual artist, Yamaguchi Takashi (ymg). Their interactive “live installation,” in which two sets of drums control images and the images play music through a synchronization of the instruments and images, has been attracting attention since Itoken/Jimanica/Ymg first performed in 2006. This attention comes not only from the music industry, but also from those working in broader artistic contexts.

Diaspo Rama
The abstract and energetic music of this trio is composed of dense and complex sonorities resulting from years of collaboration, timbral and rhythmic exploration between its members.
Diasporama mixes electronic/electro-acoustic music with free improvisation, where its members develop sonic dramaturgies and imaginary cinematographical situations that they delicately incorporate to their musical discourse.
