No Reference - Christophe Coppens

The tables are ready and the lamps are hung. But what exactly we will see is still a mystery. Acclaimed Brussels designer Christophe Coppens is revealing little about his No Reference project. He'll say only that he's been hard at work in secret on an exceptional collection of 33 couture accessories and will continue to work on the pieces at Platform21.

Nor does the title of his project give much away. No Reference: this time, Coppens is throwing off all allusions. He’ll make no nods to previous collections, the history of fashion, or existing accessories. What's left?

Pure couture? Pure attention to the process of creation, to detail, to time-consuming, precise handiwork?

Over the next two months, we will follow the process at Platform21. On days when Christophe Coppens and his assistants are at work, you are invited to help out. During the first period, there are still a few places left for those handy with a needle on Wednesday 3, Thursday 4 and Sunday 14 December, 14:00 to 18:00. It's a unique chance to experience the making of couture. Apply by email at info@platform21.com, with 'CC sweatshop' in the subject line.

Christophe Coppens is using the prize money from his H+F Fashion Award to produce No Reference. Han Nefkens presented Coppens with the €20,000 award last year. ArtEZ fashion design lecturer José Teunissen will introduce the award at the opening.
