Experience City Gaming

Almere Oosterwold

25 Jun 2015

City Games are smart and playful platforms for City Making. They engage multiple stakeholders in resolving complex urban challenges. Curious How City Gaming Works? Join the City Simulation Room at Pakhuis de Zwijger for an exclusive Game Training. Using the Gaming method we collaboratively create integral strategies for an incrementally growing Do-It-Yourself city development from Almere's Oosterwold.

Background

How is it possible that Amsterdam is facing a housing crisis while at the same time 15% of all office buildings remain unused? How can it be that in Stuttgart, Germany, thousands of people are protesting against a train station causing cost explosions, massive delays and obvious dissatisfaction with the main decision makers? The top-to-bottom way we develop our cities naturally causes problems not only in the Netherlands and Germany but worldwide.

How can we be more effective? More resourceful? How can we utilize the knowledge of the many to improve the traditional decision-making of the few?

Managing Cities Smarter

The 21st century requires new collaborative methods for city makers and Play the City addresses this challenge with a system that is based on arguably the oldest and most natural way of learning: Games.

During her research, Dr. Ekim Tan has developed City Gaming to an effective tool for multi-stakeholder management. Since then, City Games have facilitated projects in Cape Town, Amsterdam, Istanbul and Brussels, among others. And this is only the beginning.

Experience City Gaming

What if you could test your development strategies against other stakeholders in an interactive environment? The best way to learn about consensus building is experiencing it. This is why Play the City offers monthly Game Training in the City Simulation Room hosted by Pakhuis de Zwijger. Through an exclusive afternoon program

Play Oosterwold is a behaviour simulation game built to test design and finance rules of a Do-It-Yourself MasterPlan in Almere, the Netherlands.
Book this game to experience how you would as a land owner, a speculating investor, a city government neighbouring Oosterwold, a designer, or a possible future inhabitant of Oosterwold activate a Do-It-Yourself plan performing on rules? How would you tackle critical subjects such as public infrastructure, private investments and green space? How would you organize your own local roads, energy production, water provision and sewage systems?

Play the City Games facilitate a way forward through building strategic partnerships. As a participant you take the role of a stakeholder, or simply animate your own interests. You pursue your own goals in the Game while taking into account conflicting interests of your co-players. The City Simulation Room offers real-life scenarios from the Netherlands, ensuring an insightful afternoon with tangible results.

Game Masters from Play the City facilitate the process and ensure an enriching experience.
