Under the header 'Situations' de Appel, in collaboration with various partners, produces and presents since 2006 a series of performances that take place on its own premises or at alternative locations. Within the context of this ongoing performance series, de Appel presents "Baggage 1972.2007", the final project of artist Otobong Nkanga (NG/FR) student of Dasarts. “Baggage 1972.2007” is a happening by Allan Kaprow re-invented by Otobong Nkanga. In August of this year Otobong will perform this performative screening as well in Kunsthalle Bern (CH).

According to Kaprow activities and happenings don’t grow old over the years; it is not nostalgic to repeat works but rather a challenge to adapt them to the moment, to the issues, the themes, maybe even the fashion of today. As long as the 'central metaphor', as he called it, was maintained, there was no problem. By this the works stays contemporary, comparable to the transmissions of content in oral history. "Baggage" was one of more scores for happenings written by Allan Kaprow that evoked the aspect of displacement of goods from one place to another, next to a.o. “Drag”, “Transfer”, “Moving”, “Round Trip”, “The Perfect Bed”, “Trading Dirt”, and last but not least “Refills” (1967-68).

According to Phillipe Pirotte, director of Kunsthalle Bern, it became clear in conversation with Otobong Nkanga that when she would‘re-invent’ "Baggage", the return of the (art-historical) notion of ‘landscape’ would take up an importance hardly implicit in the original version of Allan Kaprow. By taking Dutch sand to the dramatically changing landscape of the oil rich country, Nigeria, she puts a strong emphasis on the notion of displacement between both continents to "Baggage.1972.2007". By taking packaged sand to Lagos and sending back to The Netherlands sand from there, the artist 're-politicizes' Allan Kaprows original.

Onder de noemer ‘Situations’ produceert de Appel sinds 2006 met regelmatige intervallen en in samenwerking met partners performances van uiteenlopende makers in het eigen gebouw en op locatie. In het kader van deze ongoing performancereeks presenteert de Appel het ‘final project’ van kunstenaar Otobong Nkanga (NG/FR), studente van DasArts. “Baggage 1972.2007” is een happening van Allan Kaprow, opnieuw uitgevonden door Otobong Nkanga. In augustus van dit jaar zal Otobong deze performatieve screening ook uitvoeren in Kunsthalle Bern (CH).

Volgens Kaprow staan activiteiten en happenings los van tijd; het herhalen van werk is geen nostalgie, maar eerder een uitdaging om ze aan te passen aan het moment, aan de vraagstukken, de thema’s en misschien zelfs aan de gebruiken van vandaag de dag. Zolang als de ‘centrale metafoor’, zoals hij het noemde, behouden blijft, is er geen probleem. Hierdoor blijft het werk actueel, vergelijkbaar met de inhoud van mondeling overgeleverde geschiedenis. Naast o.a. “Drag, Transfer”, “Moving”, “Round Trip”, “The Perfect Bed”, “Trading Dirt” en, als laatste maar zeker niet de minste, “Refills” (1967-68), is “Baggage” slechts één van de door Allan Kaprow geschreven partituren voor happenings die het aspect van verplaatsing van goederen van één plaats naar een andere belicht.

Volgens Philippe Pirotte, directeur van de Kunsthalle Bern, werd in gesprek met Otobong Nkanga duidelijk dat wanneer zij "Baggage" opnieuw zou ‘uitvinden’, de terugkeer van het (kunsthistorische) besef van de notie landschap, dat nauwelijks aanwezig was in de originele versie van Allan Kaprow, een belangrijke plaats zou innemen. Door Nederlands zand mee te nemen naar het dramatisch veranderende landschap van het olierijke Nigeria, legt zij in “Baggage 1972.2007” een sterke nadruk op het concept van verplaatsing tussen beide continenten. Door verpakt zand mee te nemen naar Lagos en Nigeriaans zand terug te sturen naar Nederland, geeft de kunstenares een nieuwe politieke lading aan het origineel van Allan Kaprow.
