Workshop: Myco Design Introduction

A special workshop for the open call participants of the Myco Design Lab

9 Apr 2014

The Myco Design Lab started off with an extensive workshop providing the first instructions to the open call participants to start working with mycelium. The workshop took place in the Mediamatic cleanroom with the University of Utrecht team and Maurizio Montalti.

24-01-2014 Bio Industry Cleanlab - Working in the Bio Clean Lab - Kasia from University of Utrecht gives instructions. The Lamina Flow air hood allows for a sterile work environment. This makes up half of the Clean Lab space. The fruiting bodies of magic mushrooms have been illegal in Holland since 2007, however, the spores are not. During this workshop we will make a substrate for the mushrooms to grow on. In our mobile Clean Room we will infect the substrate with spores of the psilocybe cubensis. You take the substrate home, where it will turn into mycelium

After discussing the different proposals on new design projects with the schizophyllum fungi it was time to get started and move into the lab. This workshop was set around the basic lab techniques, on how to make the first tests and samples and get the research started: how to work clean, how to work with liquid mycelium and how to sterilize.
