A forest with 20-feet tall, slender trees drew the attention of the visitors as soon as they were on the museum’s footbridge. In the work Borrowed Sceneries (enriched semi-naturalistic enclosure), Göttke carefully stages the image of a jungle such as it exists in our collective experience. To this aim the artist uses enormous backdrops and toys, apart from the trees, in a space-filling installation within Pavilion 4.

In addition, Florian Göttke developed the work Tabula Rasa for his presentation. This work consisted of a very large picnic table, the top of which was filled with soft sculptors clay. Here, visitors could shape their own landscape to their heart’s content. Göttke’s works call our views of the natural environment and the landscape into question. With his works he shows us that what we experience as a “natural” landscape, in reality has to do with representations that are culturally determined. According to Göttke, we only recognise a landscape if it fits a memory of a place that we have seen before.

Both artist’s projects at Museum De Paviljoens took place within the framework of SITUATIES / Laboratorium Flevoland.
