Irina is currently a second-year Ph.D. candidate at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Initiated in Canada, she received her bachelor's degree in Art History and Visual Studies, with a specification in Middle Eastern art and politics. Following that, she was granted a master's degree in Late Antiquity, Islamic, and Byzantine studies by University of Edinburgh. Currently, her doctoral thesis focuses on the medieval art of Cyprus and artistic connections to its contemporary Levantine neighbours.
Despite the specific focus in her training, Irina's scholastic interest varies widely based on her own personal background as an immigrant. Having born in Malaysia, lived in Canada, and trained in the U.K., she is also interested in colonial histories, negotiating contemporary identities, and cross-boundary interactions.
