Mycelium products
Mycelium, mushrooms, and more...
Mycelium based materials can someday replace plastic. Artists, designers, mycologists, and organizations are working with mycelium based materials, growing their own mushrooms, and exploring this new territory.

Designing mycelium plant pots
While working with mycelium at Mediamatic we tought about ways to combine mycelium with plants.
Enlarge We chose to experiment on making biodegradable plant pot because when making a positive impact on the environment by buying a new plant, we are also having a negative impact by purchasing the plant in a plastic pot. Plastic come from fossil resources, pollutes the environment and harms animals and humans. By creating a biodegradable pot we could reduce the carbon footprint of the pot and the pollution. A biodegradable material made with mycelium and plant residues like straw can also nourish…

Mycelium Experiment 03
Enlighted Chimeras
Upcycling broken found objects with mycelium to create something new & interesting.
Enlarge When I started my internship in the CleanLab of Mediamatic I had no idea how the mycelium behaves, what the possibilities & also the limits are. So I decided to create some experiments with mycelium just to get to know the material I'm gonna work with in the future. So I had a walk around Mediamatic and took interesting pieces of everything and took it with me into the lab. Broken Glass & Mycelium Is it possible for me to combine glass and mycelium? My second object I found was just a…

Mycelium Experiments 02
Chimera Furniture
What if mycelium was combined to existing furniture to give them a new life?
Enlarge A few weeks ago, we found in front of the CleanLab, a broken metal chair that was going to be thrown away. We decided to find a way to make it desirable again with a mycelium enhancement. This first prototype explores how we can fix and extend the life of broken furniture. After we painted the chair, the idea was to create a new seat out of mycelium. To give strength to the material, we used jute fabric to create a "Pillow" of living material. We filled the "pillow" with a Hemp-based…

Mycelium Experiments 01
Hybrid Material
Explore the potential of living material through a series of diverse experiments.
Enlarge Many designers and artists are interested in the research and applications of mycelium. The versatility of the material brings a lot of possibilities in a large variety of fields. From building systems to sustainable packaging, there is still a lot to discover about living materials. In the Cleanlab of Mediamatic, we are researching and exploring these possibilities. For the first experiment, we were interested in combining mycelium with plaster in order to create a hybrid material. Since…

How to build a Mycelium Pigeon Tower #3
The trials continue
After about a week and half of experimenting we have found some results.
Enlarge We learned that when we use bins as a mold for the material the bottom can get clogged with moisture and get acidic. So we should flip the bins every 3 days. Also most of the tests had some green mold on them. We tried to cut away all that we could see, unfotunately on some spots it came back. The samples that were too moldy we have had to throw away, the others we put outside to dry out on the surface, while on the bottom the mycelium can continue to grow.
